Simple Woven Coasters

Designed by Amanda Rataj

Coasters are an excellent way to use up small amounts of leftover yarn. They’re so quick and easy to make that even an absolute beginner can make a successful set in an afternoon. Because this project requires so little material, it’s ideal for testing color, various types of yarn, and practicing your weaving skills, like clean selvedges and hemstitching.

Note: This pattern is intended to be used as a stashbuster project, but any colors of Duet, Mallo, and/or Beam can be used. Order a kit.

The simplicity of this coaster pattern was great for getting re-familiarized with a floor loom, and with hemstitching. It’s a template that could lead to a lot of creative variations. The best part was... I had a question about the instructions and I gave Gist Yarn a call, Christine answered the phone and helped me understand and gave me some suggestions. Excellent customer service, thank you so much! Will be back for more.

Oh, what fun

These little coasters were such a delight to make, give, and receive (yay thank-you notes) that I wove a dozen. Amanda Rataj's suggestion to use leftover yarn was brilliant--like a year-in-review with each little square.

Square Fun!

When I was a little girl I had a little loom - Weave-It - that made little squares about this size. My dolls had such lovely blankets when I sewed them all together. Now I am a big girl and I have a big loom, but I'm still making little squares! These were fun, quick and promoted experimentation with various colors. I even sewed four together twice, put one set on top of the other, and sewed them together, stuffed with scented beads and voila! Place hot pot on top of it on your serving table and the heat from the pot spreads the scent into the room. You can even sew squares of various colors together for placemats. This big girl is having lots of fun making the little squares of her youth!
