Rigid Heddle Skill Builder Subscription Box

Expand your weaving repertoire! This subscription box delivers 12 projects in 4 shipments (three projects per box, one box per quarter) from 4 different designers over the course of a year. Each quarter's collection will explore a technique or theme in depth, designed to build your confidence and expertise with your rigid heddle loom.

Here's what each box/quarter includes:

  • Three patterns, each detailed with extensive step-by-step instructions and process photos

  • Enough yarn to weave all three projects (Gist in-house lines - Array, Beam, Duet, Dwella, Mallo, Ode, and Sero)

  • Access to an exclusive Facebook group so you can connect with other weavers working on the projects

  • Facebook Live Q&A with designers once per quarter

Tammy Bast has designed the first box of 2026, Sliding Sticks. It will walk you through three pick-up stick projects (a table runner, scarf, and set of napkins) that create beautiful and intricate designs usually woven on shaft looms. The magic here is that all of the sticks slide past each other (even the 4-stick project), so that once you set up your stick pattern, you don’t need to remove or replace them while weaving. This collection is a natural evolution of Box 3, featuring Huck and Swedish Lace projects. While previous pick-up stick experience is helpful, it is not necessary.

FAQ

What type of equipment do I need for this?

You will need a 24-25” rigid heddle loom, 10 and 12-12.5 dent heddles, 4 pick-up sticks, and stick shuttles or boat shuttles and bobbins.

If I have a 15-20" rigid heddle loom, can I do these projects?

Projects will vary in width, with some requiring up to 24" of weaving space and some requiring less. We aren't able to provide instructions for altering each pattern individually, but if you would like to try and downsize them yourself, you're welcome to give it a go! We have general instructions for resizing patterns here.

How does the subscription box work?

When you sign up, you will be charged $200 for your first box, which will ship immediately. Subsequent boxes (new designer, new projects) will be billed at $200 each on the 10th of April, July, and October, and will ship within a week of your card being charged. The patterns for each box will be delivered via email after each quarterly charge. Shipping is free if you’re in the continental US.

Do you ship internationally?

We sure do! Please note that international customers are responsible to pay for all customs and duties your country charges. We strongly encourage you to find one or a few weaving friends in your home country, and to order all together to save on shipping costs and qualify for flat rate shipping! To do this, choose one person to purchase and pay for the subscription, and have them check out with 2 (or more) subscription boxes at one time.

Can I cancel my subscription?

We think you’re going to enjoy it so much you won’t want to! But yes, if you decide this isn’t right for you for any reason, you are welcome to cancel your subscription at any time. Please note before canceling: if we have a waitlist for the subscription, your spot may be offered to someone else and you may not be able to re-subscribe until space is available.

Can I select different colors?

No, we’ve carefully planned our inventory for the year and cannot accommodate multiple colorway options.

Can I purchase the patterns without the subscription box?

No, these patterns are currently only available as part of the subscription purchase. If inventory allows, we will offer the boxes a la carte later in the year for $225/box.

What skills do I need to complete these patterns?

Before joining this subscription, you should: have a few projects under your belt, be able to warp with multiple colors, and use pick-up sticks.

Can I use a gift certificate to purchase a subscription box?

Sorry, our subscription software isn't compatible with our gift cards. Please save those for a future purchase.

Truly “SKILL” Building

The patterns in this Skill Builder (Box 1, 2026) are masterfully designed and easy to follow. The box is very appropriately labeled as a “Skill Builder”. It could also be considered a ‘confidence’ builder. Admittedly, I was intimidated by the need for three pickup sticks and eight shuttles (or bobbins) for the Strathmore Scarf, but I read and reread the instructions and proceeded with patience and care. Lo and behold, I worked my way through the project and complete the gorgeous scarf. It is not without mistakes, but I truly learned along the way, and I can’t wait to make another one. All three projects are wonderful. In addition to exposure to different skills and patterns, I am now familiar with many of the different types of Gist yarns and how they weave and finish. I HIGHLY recommend the Rigid Heddle Skill Builder Subscription Box!

Gorgeous Colors and Yarn Choices

This is my fifth Skill Builder Box. I am very pleased with the colors and feel of the chosen yarns. The patterns are beautifully designed for my Ridgid Heddle loom. All of the patterns are just enough to be challenging, yet meditative. I am so happy that I joined this subscription service. Great job Gist!

First Project Woven

I received my first Discovery Box and have enjoyed weaving the table runner. The pattern was well written and understandable for someone who has just started using 2 pick-up sticks. I love that they slide over each other so one doesn't have to be removed and replaced. I am surprised by the length. It is very long for a runner, but the 3/2 Beam is a delight!
