From the Homespun movement of the Revolutionary War to the abolitionist boycotts of cotton produced by enslaved labor, American textiles have always carried a rich history of resistance.
"Resistance is American" is a Name Draft available for 8-shaft (Broken Twill), 4-shaft (Lace) and Rigid Heddle (Color-and-Weave) looms. We've also included the threading and treadling profiles in case you'd like to create your own designs with different block substitutions.
Our hope is that you’ll weave this draft in community, alongside guild members, neighbors, friends, or loved ones, and continue the long tradition of craft as a form of care, connection, and dissent.
Please note these drafts are designed to inspire a weave-your-own-adventure, using any yarn of your choice, in your desired sett for whatever type of project you wish to weave. These are drafts only, not complete patterns for finished items.

Thank you Gist Yarns for the inspiring draft. Designing towels and then weaving them this month has been one way I’ve managed the stress of current events and quietly protested.
I just cut 8 towels off of my loom (from a 7-ish yard warp). Woven with red, white, and blue 8/2 cotton.
If you want to repeat my project, here’s the recipe:
Each block from the draft is 10 pairs of red and white threaded for basket weave.
Warp - 400 ends
70 ends blue
260 ends in log cabin (follow the block draft)
70 ends blue
Thread for plain weave at 20 epi.
Weaving for each towel
4.75 inches blue
1 repeat of draft in red and white
4.75 inches blue
Size
19 x 27.5 inches before wet finishing
If you like longer towels, weave a little more blue at the start and end.

I just completed three towels using the 8 harness draft. It was a great winter exercise for me to convert that into the size I wanted. The Gist people were most responsive in sending me the information I wanted. I would send it picture if I knew how to do that!
Thank you so much for sharing the "Resistance is American" drafts as an opportunity to vent. I wove two scarves using the 8 shaft broken twill patten with 8/2 tencel at 24 epi for myself and a friend. Thanks again. I am also a fan of your wool array yarns for small tapestries.
Was able to adapt the resistance draft to use some tencel my friend dyed for me for a different project. Turned out marvelous!
I haven’t woven this yet but am looking forward to it.
