Baroque Shadow Weave Shawl

Designed by Jennifer Leigh, woven by Christine Jablonski.

This Shadow Weave shawl showcases the amazing design complexity that is possible on a 4-shaft loom. From a distance the colors blend optically, creating an opulent look reminiscent of baroque court dress, while up close the fabric reveals four distinct hues. Woven in Sero Silk Noil, this heirloom-quality shawl will be warm in the winter and cool in summer, and can grace the wearer’s shoulders for years to come. Order a kit.

Great experiment

I had a great time weaving this, and the drape and feel of the finished product are wonderful. The author has written a couple of blog post articles about shadow weave which were really useful. The part that I wish was stated in the pattern is the importance of leading with the dark thread in the threading and the light thread in the weft. it is certainly implied in the directions as she talks about using yarn A first, but I needed to understand more about the structure and the importance of that to fully track it.

I was trying to use up some silk yarn I had so I started there and then adjusted colors. Since I had threaded half light/dark (sort of by accident or carelessness) when I saw the note, so decided to experiment with the second half and swapped the order. The half in the photo is woven light/dark. thanks!

Shawl

I have not made this project yet but am excited to learn about shadow weave. The directions seem thorough.
