Rhythm Scarf
Designed by Yun-Hsuan ChangThis lightweight, all seasons scarf is woven with a combination of Duet Cotton/Linen and Mallo Cotton Slub. The variations in the texture of the yarns add a little something extra to the simple Plain Weave structure. It is suitable for beginners to weave on a rigid heddle loom (or multi-shaft loom) while playing with the rhythm of colorful stripes. Order a kit.
The finished scarf is absolutely beautiful and I give it five stars for concept and beauty; but the instructions leave a lot to be desired, they get one star - which is why overall this project gets three stars. I was skeptical of using an 8 dent reed and mixing Mallo and Duet, but felt I needed to trust the writer of the pattern. I warped my loom as instructed but as soon as I began weaving all the duet threads lost their tension. I wove through the first two blocks but it felt so loose and uneven that I decided to cut what I had woven and finish it according to instructions to see how the finished product would look before continuing. It pretty much fell apart during wet finishing and drying. I had to give up and reevaluate.
I replaced the duet in sun with mallo in honey. I had to purchase an additional cone of mallo in natural so I’d have enough to finish a new scarf. Using all mallo yarn and switching from 8 dent to 10 dent made for a slightly heavier scarf, but also a perfectly beautiful scarf. In the end I was happy with the project but very unhappy with all the modifications I had to make (including buying two additional cones of yarn) to get there.
An additional frustration with the pattern, the way the colors were numbered - in both the warp and weft the steel mallo was the third yarn used, but it was named yarn B - that’s just unnecessarily confusing. This pattern felt written in the way a petty family member shares a recipe but purposely leaves out or changes a step so your version of the recipe will never be as good as theirs. That said, I will make this scarf again using my modifications and I do recommend this pattern, just not as written.
This was my third project on my RH loom and I really enjoyed it. I am pleased with how the scarf turned out. I used a 10 dent heddle instead of the recommended 7.5. I am a big fan of Mallo yarn - love the texture! Already planning my next project.
I bought the pattern because I loved the colors and knew it would be perfect for my older niece. I quickly decided to make another colorway for my younger niece. As soon as I had completed the first scarf, I knew I had found the Christmas gift makes for friends and family. I ended up ordering quite a few more colors to complete those using what everyone would like. In some cases, I exchanged the Mallo for Duet due to colors I wanted to use. All in all, I made 10 scarves! Loved the pattern. It was definitely a great pattern for even beginners. I used the recommended dent sizing. The yarn fulled quite a bit, so definitely left space and did not beat very much. Many compliments and people loved that they are cotton/linen, soft and not too warm to wear all day long. Just a few of the finals.
Very happy with this project. Used 10 dent reed on 4 shaft loom. Lovely yarn! Would use again.
