The Black Sheep Fiber Circle, a maker-style sista' circle and fiber arts gathering dedicated to BIPOC land stewards and agrarian artists who love to create, enjoy, and explore the legacy of African, African- and Indigenous-American textiles (and more). BSFC supports both a local and online community in which they share their sewing, knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning, quilting, dyeing, or whatever fiber projects they're working on. Their local gatherings have been taking place since 2019, following much of the racial hostilities that were swirling within the fiber arts world. This formation was a safe space for exploring and centering their collective voicesand histories.
Project: Weaving Wisdom
We envision this as a collective "quilt" of sorts, where in through the process we learn how to dress the loom and weave our individual sections into a final tapestry/hanging piece. We identified some potential teachers through the local guilds and other groups to help us learn together and accomplish this goal. The finished project will be a combined textile of all individual artists, using our own farm-raised, hand-spun, and dyed yarns. This residency has helped us not only through financial support but will also help us organize, manage, and document the process.
