Weaver's PlayBox #3 - Fine Blends

The Weaver's PlayBox is a collaboration with Liz Gipson of Yarnworker: a box filled with yarn, project inspiration, and helpful tips created especially for beginner and intermediate rigid heddle weavers.

This third box is appropriate for the advanced beginner who is ready to tackle new fibers. We assume you have woven a couple of projects, feel comfortable with basic weaving vocabulary, and are ready for a challenge.

The projects require a rigid heddle loom with at least 10" of weaving width, a 12 or 12.5 dent heddle and a stick shuttle or boat shuttle. The pattern is easily adaptable to wider fabrics.

 Weaver's PlayBox #3 Bundle 2 includes:

  • Echoview Fiber Mill Lapidary in Chyrsocolla  ~ fingering weight, 3-ply 50% merino/50% tencel, 400 yd per 3.5 oz skein, 1813 yd/lb
  • Sweet Georgia Yarns Merino Silk Lace in West Wind ~ lace weight, 2-ply 50% merino/50% silk, 765 yd per 3.5 oz skein, 3,497 yd/lb
  • Swans Island Sterling in Tourmaline ~ fingering weight, 3-ply, 85% merino/15% naturally black alpaca, 525 yd per 3.5 oz skein, 2,400 yd/lb

Including in the box is a pattern that explores a nifty cramming technique to create texture and colorwork with fingering and ultra lace yarns to light-as-air fabrics. The generous yardage of each 3.5 oz skein will allow you to make three scarves, one is an infinitely versatile “skinny scarf”; a scarf and a stole; or a shawl—all generous in length for wrapping up on chilly summer night or air-conditioned spaces. Narrower widths can be seamed together using an open lacy stitch to create wider fabrics.

    Love this kit!

I'm pretty new to weaving so weaving dish towels wasn't the first thing that came to mind. I'm so glad I ordered this Play Box! I loved using the different yarns for small, manageable projects that let me experience the feel and working with the materials. Thanks so much!

I love this yarn and pattern

I did this Playbox a year ago in a different color for a Weave Along. It is, by far, my favorite yarn and pattern. It is incredibly soft, the yarn behaved wonderfully and the pattern very easy. I recommend strongly

    Beautiful yarns

I have not started the project yet , but what I can say is the yarn is beautiful with an amazing depth of colors . Considering the expense of the yarn I don’t want to rush into using it .

Nice yarn, but no pattern(s) or indication as to how to get pattern(s). Major disappointment.

    Not good value overall

The yarn is beautiful, but I was disappointed in the lack of versatility of this product. You do not receive a printed pattern - rather a beautifully illustrated pdf with many photos that I had to pay Staples to print. Second, there were no options for alternate patterns in case the weaver decided the rigid heddle ones were not workable. Even basic guidelines for using the yarn on a 4 shaft loom would have been appreciated. (when I asked for such an option I did not receive a reply)
